{Recipes} Mock Wendy's Frosty

Summer is really so close to over, but Kansas had a heat wave last week. So it was obviously the perfect weather for making some ice cream- or a frosty!

You've probably heard the rumors about the cauliflower cake. Yes, I really did try that, it was a REAL recipe, I didn't just make it up!! The cauliflower was supposed to make it softer. And you know what? It was a very soft cake. A very soft cake that smelled like cauliflower... it all went down hill from there.

As a result of that experiment, I was pretty sure I was going to be banned from the kitchen... forever. I knew that I needed to come up with something good, quickly! This frosty recipe was perfect. My family was reconciled to the fact that the results of my experimentation could be just as good as they were bad. It was a close call for me though. Nonetheless, I have to bring up this frosty often when a new recipe I try isn't...soo great :)

There is so many great things about this recipe! It's easier than ice cream (this, I suppose, is an opinion. I just find it difficult to take the time and make custard, or blanch milk. It's a little bit of a touchy process, that requires patience!). It's also cheaper. Because this does not have any heavy whipping cream or half-and-half, it's a little less costly than ice cream! (Especially if you catch chocolate milk on sale!). It's quick to put together, perfect for these last few hot days, and gets fourteen thumbs up around here! (You volleyball girls should know that since it has chocolate milk in it, it's the perfect sports drink! Right? :)

Original recipe from Becky Austin on Food.com

Note: These amounts work perfectly in our 4 quart ice cream freezer. If you have a smaller/bigger can, you should probably consider adjusting the amounts of sweetened condensed milk and cool whip to make sure it tastes like a frosty.

Ingredients:
16 oz. Cool Whip
1 14 oz. can Sweetened condensed milk
1/2-1 whole gallon of chocolate milk

In a large bowl, beat together the cool whip and sweetened condensed milk. Pour into ice cream freezer. Add chocolate milk to the "fill line". Mix the chocolate milk and the cool whip/sweetened condensed milk until combined. (I've found it works better to mix it well before you start to freeze it.) Freeze according to manufacturers directions.

My family is split about 50/50 on whether to eat it straight out of the ice cream maker, or let it freeze overnight. It's a more frosty-like consistency fresh, but it doesn't freeze as solidly as ice cream does. I would definitely suggest trying both ways! (I served it to my cute little brothers in their pajamas! :) It's been requested we bake french fries to go along with it! :)

Question:
When do you consider summer over??
